Pain in your fingers or thumb can be caused by the muscles in your hand, arm, shoulder, chest or neck. That’s a lot of muscles!
You might suspect that you have Carpal Tunnel Syndrome but usually finger, hand, wrist and arm pain is caused by muscles.
You can get often get rid of your symptoms (your pain or discomfort) by doing your own self-massage. Here’s how:
Explore the muscles that are on the palm side and opposite side of your lower arm–up near the elbow. The finger tendons and muscles attach way up by the elbow!
Press in and see whether you can find any really tender places. You will have to apply enough pressure that you can find those tender places but don’t kill yourself!
You don’t have to create pain just discomfort. If you have the feeling that you are creating ‘good pain’ you are in the right spot.
When you (or your massage therapist) are pressing in the right place, your muscles will say, “That hurts; don’t stop!” That’s because it’s the appropriate place to press and release the muscle.
When you do find tender places, hold them for about 12 seconds. The tender place should start to become less tender as you hold the spot. If it does, that means the muscle is relaxing.
Also explore (press the muscles) in the front of your chest and your upper arm in front near the armpit. Tight muscles in those areas can cause finger pain.
There are muscles in the back of your hand between the bones that can cause middle finger pain, too. By using a narrow tool–maybe a finger tip or a pencil eraser–you can press into the space between the bones of the hands to explore and treat them.
